>And anyone else who has considered a spindle extension. I hope this may help you some.

This is in response to two emails from different WC'rs that arrived in my mailbox this morning. It is regarding the spindle extension that has sometimes appeared on this site with pictures of work in progress....

-------------------

Sure! I have the 3" spindle extension from bestwoodtools.com . I leave it on full time, now that I have a drive center that works on my chuck.

It has three drawbacks - 1. It has no morse taper, so if you use a drive spur/taper you're out of luck, 2. It does not have a hole drilled for a vac chuck, but this is easy to do on your own with a tailstock drill chuck adapter, and 3. The threads aren't hardened (so you can't use set screws very effectively with your chucks.

Still, with those drawbacks, of which #3 only continues to exist for me, it is so much more functional than not having it that I'd buy it all over again. Here's a link..

OH - it'll get locked onto your spindle if you don't use a nylon washer in between it and the spindle. I think it is because the threads go deeper than the tap. I had to use a torch to get mine off when it got stuck, but it won't get stuck with a nylon washer. You can get Powermatic to send you a few for a phone call.

Folks have occasionally questioned whether it produces any measurable runout - I have never detected any difference at all, or whether it puts add'l load on the bearings. Technically I suppose it does but it hasn't bothered the big boy yet.

Hope this helps.

>Mike,

Last September I bought a Spindle Adapter (changes my 1.25"x8tpi to a 1"x8tpi so I could use old faceplates) for my Vega from Best Wood Tools. At that time, they had begun offering spindle adapters and spindle extensions with holes through them for a couple of dollars more.

>I used one as well that I had made in a local shop, but I found that while runout was not a problem, vibration was. Seems the further I got from the headstock's mass, the more likely I'd get vibration and the resultant scolloping in the cut.

I only used mine when I had a deep bowl that would hit the headstock when reverse-working on the foot. Since I've made several vacuum drum chucks, I now use them as jam chucks in the same situation and the extender doesn't get used any more.

>Interesting. I'll have to remove mine next time I get chatter on a big bowl and see what happens. Could be!

>Good advice. I'm book marking it putting it on my wish list. I do alot of platters with wide rims and I find it very difficult to get behind the platter to part it off or true it up. Even with the 4" tool rest, there just isn't much room between the head stock and the platter.

That is the only complaint I've had about the 3520. It's a great lathe.

>Earl,

Why don't you simply reverse your platter and hold it with a jam chuck and the tailstock to finish the underside? Seems like it would be much easier.

>Mike, I think the 3520 used a spring loaded spindle lock. Is the model A the same? Seems to be a good feature to prevent starting up with the spindle locked. Is this any disadvantage with removing accessories or indexing?
