Now I can get back to weird stuff

>Finished the two bowls I owed in between making bugs.

This is a particularly lovely piece of walnut, so I tried to do my best with it. About 12" at the inside rim. Only sanded to 320 and then 0000 wool because I didn't want it as shiny as many of my other bowls. Coated with walnut oil (of course) and then beeswax/oil mix. Will be a 30th birthday gift for a friend of mine's wife. Gotta say, of all the people that buy my work, when someone thinks enough of it to give it to their wife, it makes me more proud, and humble at the same time, than when a collector pays high dollar for it. There just can't be any higher compliment as far as I'm concerned. Comments welcomed, and thanks for looking. Now to go start on another bug.

Seriously, nice bowl. I just got through paying 12,000 shekels per cubic meter of American walnut. BTW the rate is 4.3 shekel top the dollar. I only got a board not a cubic meter but geez.

>Mike,

Love the profile! When I read that it was turned from walnut, I was like "Naw! Can't be!" That's got some gorgeous figure in it.

That is high praise indeed! You gotta love it when people dig your work that much! I betcha' your friend's wife really loves this bowl.

There's something about going over someone's house and seeing the bowl you made for them (or gave them) being displayed, or used on a daily basis. I can think of no higher praise.

See ya around,

Dominic

I've got a bunch of walnut. How do we go about getting it to Israel?

thanks everybody

>I usually pass on black walnut as it makes such a mess when it is wet turned, but this bowl has made me change my mind, I think.

The little "stand" in the corner pic is simply 3 triangles of 8/4 walnut arranged so the bowl sits on them. It looks like an "offering" or something and I think I might expand on that idea in the future. If the customer hadn't asked for a bowl with a stable base I would have made it smaller and then the stand would have looked pretty neat.

Whenever I see a cleverly designed stand for a bowl or other work I always think "I just can't do that stuff" but decided to give it a shot anyway. I can see how it can take some experimenting, but just this first shot made me a little less hesitant about trying it again. If anyone wants I'll show a blow up of that corner pic. It makes for a neat way to display a bowl.
