Bandsaw motor amps question?

Barry Irby

>I have a 14" Delta bandsaw with a motor labeled 3/4 HP ll.6 amps @ 120 volts. The local wood Craft store had a Jet Bandsaw motor labeled 1 hp 10 amps @ 120 volts.

Since the AMPs is considered the most conservative or accurate way to rate the power of a motor, Doesn't this indicate the motor with the 11.6 Amps is likely to be as powerful or more so than the one with 10 amps even though one says it's 3/4 hp and the other is 1 hp?

I was thinking of upgrading increasing the size of my motor, but I think I want one with substantially more power and it looks like this is not it. Right?

The old Sears trick....

>Motors can be rated either in sustained horsepower or peak developed horsepower. Your good brands rate the motors in sustained hp. Amps is a good indicator of the actual hp. Most likely, the motor pulling 11 amps is more powerful than the one pulling 10 amps.

>Barry,

You can determine the hp of any electric motor by the formula:

"voltage times amp-draw times the motor efficiency factor [.8 for 80% for almost all general use motors] divided by 746"

Since voltage is, on average, supplied (if you're lucky) at 115v, apply the formula and you find that (115 x 11.6 x .8 /746) at 115v your Delta has 1.43 hp and the JET is 1.23; not the direction you said you want to go.

But why change saws if you're happy with the machine's set-up and other capacity? You can change motors for a lot less. If you have to stay in the 115v phase, you can get up to a 2 hp motor to fit your machine provided you're running a 20 amp circuit. Trick is matching the motor's mounting frame and shaft size to the rest of your saw. Write down all the info listed on your current motor and stop by a motor shop and ask.

>Mark, I wasn't clear, The Woodcraft sore had a Jet motor in the reduced price pile and was selling it for $75. I saw the 1 HP on it and wondered if that was worth considering as an upgrade to my 3/4 on my saw. At least I had sense enough to check the AMPS and obviously this is not a good upgrade even if the motor were free. Thanks for the formula.

I cruised through Harbor Freight. You are right. Finding the matching frame and shaft is not easy. Also, this is a low speed motor and there doesn't seem to be as many of those around.

This is not pressing, the saw works fine, I just thought I might enjoy it more if it had a few more horses. Just got my eye open for a motor on the cheap. Was a little surprised to see JET make the claim for 1 HP when Delta was only claiming 3/4. Makes it hard to shop.

>Barry,

Drop by local motor rebuilder shops and see what they have. If you explain what you have and want the guy might work you a good deal on an exchange.
