I have a used Gast vacuum pump with homemade wooden and pvc chucks. I use it on a Powermatic 2035 and an older Nova Comet mini lathe. John

>I have two homemade chucks--one made with 3" PVC pipe and MDF, and the other solid maple, 5" dia.
For seals, I use the foam sheets with peel-off backing available in 9 x 12" sheets at Walmart in the craft dept.--I think they're called "Foamies" and they work fabulously.
I found a used Gast pump at a surplus store for $30, 1/4 hp 220v.
I use an old shortbed metalspinning lathe adapted for wood, no brand name on it but it's a Spinmaster I've discovered after doing a web search. I turned the spindle nose down to 1" x 8 tpi from some odd size, drilled it through at 3/8", and bored a #2 morse taper. The tailstock had an odd lever-in-a-notch locking system, the lever went into one of several holes spaced 1 1/2" apart in the ram instead of a feed screw as normal lathes have. I made a new tailstock ram with left-hand thread feedscrew and a handwheel.

>Vicmarc. It uses a standard shop vac and ther is no need to run anything through the headstock, it attaches on the spindle side.
Me too...

>I don't use the vac chuck often but the Vic vac plate and my Fein shop-vac does what I need to do and it can be installed or removed in seconds. What it lacks in inches of mercury it makes up for in volume of air. If I used a vac mounted system more often I might prefer something else but this one works for me.

>I have a Nova DVR and just use Teknatool's vacuum adapter hooked to a Fein Turbo II shop vac. Chucks are built from MDF and PVC pipe - I have two flat ones and two drums. The Foamies that Ken mentioned provide some of the seals, old mouse pads also work. Avoid black material for the seals - it can mark your wood.
