Keeping myself busy

Mark Kauder. Phenix City, AL

>Is is a picture of some of the bowls I have been working on for the last 6-9 weeks. For scale, the platter (Ambrosia Maple) is 18" in diameter, the very small red segmented bowl in the front is 2.5" in diameter, The Walnut big segmented bowl on the left is 11" in diameter. The rest are 4-7" in diameter. I am still finishing 6 other in the 4-7" range. The 4" bowls are are end of year presents for my sons teachers. The 7" bowls are presents to friends, and bowls for donation to various charities this year. The little tiny bowl is a present to a special friend.

>Beautiful Work Mark,

I wish that I had the patience for segmented work , by the time I had all those pieces cut and glued together I would have a headache and no hair :)

>Those are beautiful. They look especially nice as a group in the picture. I'm tempted to try some segmented pieces but I'm not sure I have the patience to do it. Does the cutting and gluing process get easier with practice or does each piece always require careful planning?

>Attention needs to be paid to each ring, to have nice glue joints but that is just part of the process. I tend to make my bowls is batches, using the same design, but varying the wood combinations. If you want the rings wide enough, you also have some latitude in the shapes. All of these except the big Walnut one are the same pattern, scaled up or down.

>Hi Mark,

Beautiful grouping of work. You have been busy my friend.

I see a lot of segmented turning, and it ain't all about patience to do the glue ups. I feel it all about form and design. Yours always hit a home run to my eyes.

Great work!!
