What did I do right??

>I'm making 4 porridge (sp) tables with those offset legs. This is my first time trying this. I ruined the first three legs (expected) I did the next 14 with a lot of work. 22" long about a half hour each. When i did the 15th it was like something happened. i did the thing in ten minutes. Same with the sixteenth. I was having trouble with whipping in the middle, and nothing just seemed to sound right. The first good four were yellow pine, the next were cherry, then the last 8 were curly maple. Trouble is I don't know what I did or what happened to make the last two go so easy. The only thing that might have been different on the last two that I know of was that they were running a little faster at roughing and finish. Could i have been running the others too slow 900/1500 rpm

>What happened was practice....by the time you turned that many legs, you figured out how to do them. You learned which tool did what part of the shape the best....and your eye got better at "seeing" the shape form.

As to lathe speed....you don't say what the spindle diameter was, but for an average 2"-3" diameter, I usually turn at 1400 rpm or so.....

>That's what you'd call a "quantum leap". A small one, relatively, but I think all serious woodturners go through these discoveries, especially when they do repetitive turning. That's the best way to learn!
