Shhhhhhh, don't tell Larry!!

Molly Winton

>Okay, so I'm at my club's meeting last night. Our program is to have a swap meet and auction. I bring a few tools etc. to get rid of and bring in about $115. Not bad getting rid of stuff just gathering dust. Then the auction starts. Nothing of real interest to me until they get to the brand new Jet Mini lathe that was donated to the club. I don't need a new lathe! I have three (including a Jet Mini) already. Why am I bidding on this thing?? I don't know. It's a great deal? I like lathes? It's now sitting in the back of my van.

Here's my rationalization: I bought it for $210., I sold $115 worth of shop junk, so I really just spent $95 on it...right? So why haven't I fessed up to Larry (husband) yet??

>Molly,

You could take lessons from my wife. Although she tells me about all her purchases., they are presented as " I bought it on sale and look how much money I saved you!!!!!!!"

Enjoy the lathe!

>Just walk up to Larry, look him in the eye and say, "Hello, my name is Molly and I'm a turnaholic".........he'll understand.

Molly, do you really think he'll be surprised?!?

I read your Subject and before I started reading your message I thought "she bought something". We KNOW you! : )

>Exactly what I was thinking!

One for each member of the family?

The neighbors might want to learn to turn?

A nice center piece?

Oh, just tell him!

Re: Shame on you!

Molly Winton

>Shame, shame, shame! Where is the 'brotherhood'?Where is the support for a fellow addict? Where is the enabling?? I did get some nice wood too, so if I have to buy someone off, at least I have the extortion pay-off. I won a beautiful hunk of eucalyptus, two lovely apricot halves, and bought a chunk of dense buckeye burl. Wait a minute...I just gave everyone reason to extort me! Dang, I can't delete from this forum.

>Nah, quite frankly if he knew the lathe was up for auction and I DIDN'T bring it home, he'd probably be more surprised. Gotta love that guy. He indulges me so.

>To be honest, that rationale did cross my mind. This gives me two minis now, one for both kids. Heh, heh, what we won't do/say to feed our addiction.

Its Okay.....

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Its okay Molly, we're all here to help.

...whatever it takes to convince ourselves....and significant others....the we are in constant need of new tools and of course absurd amounts of wood in every flavor it comes in :)

Enjoy the new adiction, er, addition to your turning family :)

>Molly:

I did not understand your logic, and told Janet about what you did. She tried to explain the rationale behind it (in simple monosyllabic words), and eventually gave up. She says that I just don't understand basic finance!

>Hi Molly,

The difference between us is that if I had been at that meeting, bidding, I wouldn't have gotten it as cheap as you did. My lovely wife, Janet, would have been bidding fiercely against me. Sometimes it's tough having two turnaholics in the same family!

>Molly, I bet Larry has his own parade that rain _could fall on in the unlikely chance it ever becomes necessary. Works for me, or is Lorraine smiling to herself while she lets me think so.

BTW, I've got two bargain mini-jets myself. I've yet to meet a lathe that I wouldn't like to own, but that's a whole other addiction.

Holly turns like a dream

Molly Winton

>Hi Carole. Yes, I've turned two little hollows from the holly. As my subject line says, it turns beautifully, with long streams of shavings. Hollowing was easy too. After drying one distorted beyond anything that could remotely look appealing, while the other has hope. I've really got to watch the pith at the base while drying to avoid cracking. It's been fun. I'm getting some faint greening, but not unsightly.
