>I have both the power lock and the wave systems. Each one has it's place. The power lock is good for sanding exterias of bowls, and interia of larger bowls. The wave system comes with several velcro pads, from a thin one to a thicker softer pad to get in curves. If I had to start with one,I would recommend the wave system, which runs about $49-$59 depending weather you want the 2"or 3" kit.

>Tom, as you may or may not have seen, in the last few days there have been a couple of threads on this subject. I recommend sanding disks from Steve Worcester, and the Vic Wood Passive Sander. I really like the passive sanding, much less noise. After some experience, it works extremely well, but it does have a learning curve, like everything else.

If you want to use a drill, however, and I sometimes do for the bits of torn grain and small defects, I recommend the Tim Skilton sanding pads to hold the disks. You can also get these from Steve. As far as which drill, many folks here like the angled drill, by Milwaukee and another name that escapes me at the moment. I have one, and like it, but remember that many production turners use a standard drill. Mike Mahoney, for example, told a group of us once he uses the cheapest Dewalt corded drill he can find, because they lasted the longest. YMMV.

You can reach Steve by email with this:

or see his website at:

Standard obligatory note - I buy from Steve because he sells good stuff inexpensively, knows my name when I call, and is quick about getting things to me when I let my stock drop to perilously low levels. I appreciate good service like the rest of you, and share with folks the good ones I find.

>Sometimes you just have dumb luck. I use a cheap corded Dewalt drill for sanding because I had it and did not like it for anything else. It got demoted to staying at the lathe. No wonder I was a little confused by people wearing out or ruining much "better" drills like the Mil walkie and the Souix Electric. (Said to be the same drill in different colors) Odd. I had the durable one and did not know it.

I am thinking of getting about six disks from Craft Supplies (I think) that have the hex shafts and using the quick change snap coupling. I will make a board or shelf with shallow holes for each and have a different grit on each. Quicker to change the disk than the paper and the paper can stay on the disk until I wear it out. No more half worn disks floating around. Less wear on the Velcro and they can cool while I sand with a different grit.

I don't have experience with all the different systems. Now if everyone would send me a complete set of their stuff, I would be glad to contrast and compare and let you know.

Just make the thing. For a few cents and a few minutes you are home free. Check my site for info on a quick change system or the standard.

>I have the wave kit and really like it. I got the 2" starter kit from Highland Hardware for $34.99. The three inch kit is slightly more. Each kit includes a disc holder with 1/4" mandrel; hard, soft, and extra-soft innerface pads, and 5 Wave discs each in 80, 120, 180, 220 & 320 grits.
