An alcohol question

Robert Cox

>I haven't tried it yet but have read with some interest.

I have a question.

My understanding is that the alcohol is supposed to replace the water in the wood and then evaporate more quickly than water would.

Thus drying the bowl more quickly.

That water must then have been left behind in the alcohol container. If the alcohol is replacing water then the alcohol left must not be pure alcohol or there is a layer of water below the alcohol.

Is there any way to tell what percentage water is in your alcohol so you know when it is no longer useful?

>First - water and ethanol are completely miscible - there will never be a "layer" of water.

Second - Ron isn't too far from the mark on his antifreeze tester idea. As water is "denser" than ethanol, the more water in the solution, the denser it is.

As to when the alcohol is useless - probably a long time. You are after the "free" and the "bound" water in the wood. You would probably get to about 50-60% water before you saw too much lessening of the effect.

I am pretty sure he covered the dilution "problem" by saying that because each piece removes some alcohol from the tank, it is necessary to occasionally "top off" the tank with new alcohol and thus the potency has never been an issue for him.
