Spalted Maple Burl Bowl

Ron in Drums PA

>7" x 2" (approx.)

Alcohol dried

Waterlox finish

I just love the wood in this one. I have it's sister still on the bench, the spalting broke off and I'm trying to decide if it's art or trash.

As always comments/critiques welcomed.

Thanks for looking

>Yes, it is big leaf maple and it is round on my monitor.

You monitor should have some adjustments.

Hey, that wood grows on trees around here.

>Hi Ron,

Excellent bowl. The shape really shows off the wonderful figure.

The twin could be salvaged if the spalted part came off in one or more large pieces. Reattach it with blank epoxy. The black glue line will look like a spalt line.

I have you on my list of people using the alcohol drying process regularly with good results. Thanks for mentioning when you use the process on pieces you post. It helps to dispel the notion that the process is still experimental.

>Thanks Dave.

I like using alcohol for dying woods. It gives me the freedom to experiment and not having to wait 6+ months for the wood to dry. The problem I had with air drying was after 6 months I forgot what I was doing!

I wish I could glue the section back on. I tossed the broken section. I have a finish on the sister, expect where the glue block is, I'll finish it up and see what it looks like then.

>Ron, I've looked at this a bunch of times, here and on WOW. I can't figure a couple of things out. Help me please.

First - what broke? Did it break after taking this picture? I can't see anything that broke.

Second, until I saw the second pic I thought it was a platter with a subtly defined rim - based on where the light was reflecting. I then saw the 2nd shot and realized it was a bowl, and then looked at the top again until I was even more confused. It looked like the interior profiles was very different from the exterior. Now that I've had lunch and am looking again, it looks like those two light reflections might simply be telltale signs of where you have slight profile changes rather than continuous smooth curves. It could be just window reflections, but I try to use the light reflections in turnings as clues to where profiles change. (BTW, for anyone really new reading this - this is a very good way to tell where your interiors need improvement, wet your bowl down and shine a bright light at it - anywhere you have more than one reflection is usually a profile spot that can be smoothed out. Not always but usually)

The wood is beautiful. If you tell me it cracked after taking this picture I'll be as bummed as you are.

Ron's Reply:

This isn't the broken one. It's sister, which came from the same section of wood has the broken section.

Ron's Reply:

It must be the window reflections, the side walls are parallel. The bottom starts out a little heavier so I can turn a small profile, almost like what you did to the bottom of your Oak Firewood Bowl. There is a slight change, The side walls are 1/4" and the base is 3/8" before the profile is cut.

The reason you see a dark line down the center of the window's reflection is because they are two double hung windows side by side and the dark spot is the post between the two windows. If you look real close in the reflection you can see a Great Horned Owl with a mouse in it's beak sitting in a Douglas Fir. If you eyes are real good you can see that the mouse is still holding on to a piece of cheese.

This part of the Shipp-score? If so, how'd you get it to spalt so quickly?
