Oak firewood, bottom first

Oak firewood, bottom first

Mike Schwing from Md.

>No joke. This was in a huge pile of firewood. Mostly oak and ash and maple. I saw some telltale bark on this large chunk and took it to the bandsaw. Only piece of oak I've ever turned, not sure what kind it is, but it must have been from a knee from the way it is figured. About 11" wide, sanded to 12000 grit with Micro Mesh, oiled (Watco) and then sprayed with Target Coatings water based pre-cat lacquer. Nice stuff, no smell at all.

>Mike, that is one sweeeeet piece of wood. I am so glad you rescued that one from the fire place. Its also good to see that you haven't given up straight turning. Thanks for sharing it with us.

>Gosh, Mike, that is the most beautiful oak I have seen. Glad you kept it simple so the wood could speak -- heck, speak? - no, yell, to us.

>Man, that's some kind of purty! I've steered away from oak too, but if I could get a hold of some of that, I'd be turning it too! Really nice stuff.

Any more comments about the laquer? I've heard great things about Target Coatings, and I'm eager to try it. I love oil finsihes, and have used them on 99 percent of my work, but it has it's limitations - for one, it totally destroys fresh Ambrosia maple, and I've got a bunch of super quality AM that deserves a clear, semi-gloss to high-gloss hand rubbed laquer finish.

>Mike, that truly is a beautiful find and I love the bottom better, too! : )

I've been waiting for some verification as to the wood species because I have a few small pieces turned from this same wood (least looks the same) and don't know what to call it.

>Hi Mike,

Very nice hunk of wood. I love the ones that were once destined for the fireplace but are saved to make such nice pieces!

Thanks for the pics,

Mike

Got to look more closely at my oak pile in Apex, NC!!!

>Hi Mike

Very nice. There are a lot of things to like about this bowl. It's hard to make a bowl of simple design. It feels good to work an unfamilure wood and have everything work out. We make so many choices when we turn wood. I wish I could make the same execlent choices on my next bowl.
