>Times like this I wish my idiot BIL was still driving cross country for a living instead of local... Of course I would first have to convince SWHTM what a fantastic deal this was and how it would cause permanent psychological damage if I had to pass on it....

of course the psychological damage is nothing compared to the physical damage I would have if I did not ask SWHTM

>That seller appears to know very little about the lathe, and is making serious misstatements.

A Stubby 1000 weights in at 875 pounds, not 1000, and it's swing over the bed is 20" not 34", but is 43" with the bed retracted. Opening price is just about "retail"

You might be right-

steve antonucci

>It does appear to be brand new. I doubt it "fell off of a truck", or there would be a big hole in the ground next to it.

I thought it seemed odd that someone would have that lathe, with no evidence that it had ever been used (look at the picture), but how the heck could you steal one?

I can see the TV image now- another famous low speed chase with LAPD cruising down the 405 chasing a forklift...

Although- it does appear to be plugged into 220V

[Ps-s-st, Hey Bob-o, mah-mahnnn. I know this real estate dude that has some truly primo land in South Florida that you can probably get pretty cheap if you don't wait until the rest of the people find out about it. But you do have to act fast, and whatever you do, don't let this get out or the rush will be on . . .]

>Where's the bargain? I did a quick Google to doublecheck my memory bank (which has a nearly zero balance right now, similar to the other bank), and found that retail is right at $5800.

A minimum bid of $5500, to start, doesn't take into account that it's a used lathe, with a somewhat dubious history and questionable warranty. I'd be surprised if I couldn't walk into Craft Supplies and take a new one home for the $5500.

I'll pass...

Lately I have been using E-bay for a guide to what not to buy and what not to pay.

Pick it up on the rebound

John Trant (Baltimore/DC area)

>I doubt he will sell it at that price (starting the bids at less than 10% off of retail). He states in the title that it is priced to sell because the wife demands it. My guess is that he priced it high so that he can keep it (but at least he can tell his wife he tried). Otherwise, he is fooling himself about its value, even if it is slightly used (is that like being slightly pregnant?). If he truly wants to sell it, he will repost with a more modest starting bid. That's when the fun begins.

>In response to my email about why he wants to sell it, and that the price is retail, he said that he has to sell because he is moving, and that it's not retail as Craft quoted him $6,000. But the way he wrote it seems to indicate that he didn't know how much it cost and had to ask them!

Maybe if no one bids on it he will realize he is way to high and he can't scam us!

Re: Not a Scam

>if he's legit.

Ruth,

A new 1000 with 3 hp motor like that will now cost you $6,500 plus shipping, and you'll wait 6 months to get one.

There a few 1000's around and that's the only one I know of for sale. I got mine 2 years ago and paid more than $6000 when the exchange rate with Oz was much better.

>Mark, not to create controvery over something so silly, but I referred earlier to a Google I did this morning, and came up with a number of dealers advertising the 1000 at within $20 of $5800. I guess it may be old info, but I'd still bet it would be doable at that price. Again, this is a used lathe, no matter how well or not well it has been used. If the prices have increased substantially, the websites haven't been updated to reflect it.

Mark Mandell - Gone Round In Jersey

>Russ,

CS only has the 750 for which they make a stand, usually sold separately, that looks like the 1000 base. Also note that the price is freight collect so add another $200 or so to the net delivered price.

Re: Craft Supplies is part of the "Scam"

Russ Fairfield

>Last night Craft Supplies had BOTH the Stubby 1000 AND the 750 on their Website. This morning there is only the 750 that sells for $4775. I would not have mentioned the 1000 and the price if it hadn't been there. How stupid do you guys think I am??

Don't answer that???
