Grizzly Vicmarc copy

>I just went out and played with my chucks. the new Grizzly chuck looks a lot like a Vicmarc but doesn't have the fit and finish. I swapped the jaws between the two and they do fit. The Grizzly jaws are a snug fit. Based on the mediocre machining on the rest of the chuck I don't know if the tolerances are tight enought for the jaws to swap on all chucks.

The biggest difference between the two is the slop or tolerance between the helical and the inner jaws. The Vicmarc has very little slop maybe .010 to .015 inch. I didn't measure this was an educated guess. The Grizzly has maybe .075 to .100. That's quite a bit but in actual use I don't think it will matter much. When compressed it locks down good. When expanded it seems to lock good. It just has some slop inbetween.

I think it's a good chuck for $89. I don't know if I would recommend it as a second chuck to be used with the vicmarc. It did work on mine but the machining is not nearly as good and I don't believe the parts would be that accurate all the time. If you don't have a chuck and want one then I think I would recommend this. The fit and finish is better than most of the inexpensive chucks I've seen.

I almost forgot. It does come with an insert that is removeable. They basically copied the vicmarc in everything but accuracy. It comes with a screw center as well that looks just like the Vicmarc center.

>Thanks for the head's up, John,

If the jaws run true when tight, then I wouldn't be too concerned about the backlash in the gears. I have an old Vickmark with tommybars for which I have several sets of jaws. It might be worthwhile to purchase the Grizzly and see if my jaws will fit. I wouldn't mind having a newer chuck, even if I had to buy it cheap. 8^]

Thanks again,

Gary

>John, is this the same chuck that was on sale for 39.95 recently? The one I'm thinking of has a jaw travel much shorter than the Vicmarc, although maybe there's a stop pin that can be removed to make the travel bigger.

Wanna try eccentric turning?

no, this one is larger. If it weren't for the mediocre quality of the machining it would look exactly like my Vicmarc 100 chuck. When I say mediocre machining I don't mean to imply bad machining just not as good as vicmarc or oneway. The vicmarc and Oneway chucks are precision pieces of equipment and work very well.

I think the Grizzly is a good buy for price concious people (I'm holding my hand up here). It is not in the same class as a top of the line lathe.

>Just got my Grizzly chuck last night. The one thing I did do was try my M33 insert in the Griz chuck and it fits. This means that for those that want a 1.25X8 or M33x3.5 version of the griz chuck you can just buy the insert from Packard or Craft Supplies and the chuck from Griz.

This chuck does not have as smooth an action as the Vicmark but it sure look alot like it.

Glad you tried that. I only tried one insert and forgot to write that up. Grizzly doesn't sell the inserts but Craftsupplies does.

I have the inserts....

>TD,

I have the larger Vicmarc Chuck, VM120 and I am looking for a larger insert - 1 1/4" x8 TPI - as I am planning to buy a Powermatic 3520A. Do you have this insert and a price for it? Also, I would like to find other jaw set for this chuck, including the 1" jaws, the Long Nose Jaws and the Raffan Step Jaws that fit the larger VM-120. Would appreciate you letting me know if you have these other items and your price.

Thanx,

Black Bear
