Oriental flair?

Capt Skip

>Got a chance to turn thursday night. Chucked a peice of pearwood and started. Didn't have a shape in mind but it became my first sort of hollow form. All done with a Ellsworth gouge so the underside of the rim is thicker then I would have liked. Most turned to 1/8" thick. I was having so much fun I completed forgot about watching Survivor on tv.

My wife thought it had an oriental look to it.

The bowl sits 4 1/2" high andd is 6" diameter. Finish is sanded to 1200 then waterlox. Please let me know what you think. I almost had the nerve to burn or texture the lip and still may.

>Hi Capt., Looks like you have done a lot of things right on this piece.

The foot is the appropriate size for the piece, and the form flows nicely without dips, bumps or flat spots. I personally like forms with a big opening, invites the viewer to take a peek inside.

There appears to be a darker wood for the foot.A burned or textured rim may be a nice match.

I think the rim could look good with a concave shape as well, as another approach. Very nice piece!

>Nice flowing shape and I do like the rim. I think you have a good idea as far as texturing that rim. However, looks good as it is.

Nice work!

>Very nice form, captain. If it was me, I wouldn't try to burn the rim (with a torch) at this stage - the edge will burn much faster than the rest and you'll find it difficult to burn the whole rim without affecting the body of the bowl. Pyrography or texturing would work well I think, especially if you can come up with a design that adds to the oriental feel.

Do another and texture the rim and see which you like best. If your wood has a pleasent pattern then it will usually look good without texturing, coloring or other decorative touches. It can be easy to overdo in our zeal to try something new.
