>Hi,

I want to turn three newel posts for the stair railings. Is this a huge undertaking? Should I use a solid piece or build up a hollow box from 2" thick boards and turn this. I thought that the hollow box would be easier to mount and less prone to cracking. Please advise.

Thanks,

>Tim,

You don't mention the final size, I'm assuming around 5" diameter? The solid wood would actually be more stable and less likely to crack as you'd be glueing dried wood.

>HI Tim, it would be good practice for your spindle turning skills, I assume you want all three to match.LOL.

Any difficulties you may encounter may be more than offset by the pride you feel when you show off the pieces to friends and family.

I would suggest studying actual newel posts, then draw the design you want. Don't count on coming up with a good balanced design by accident.

A bonus, you can use any type of wood you please!
