Live Center?

Live Center?

Mk

>I bought a Jet 1442 lathe through amazon. I have had it only a few months. Recently, I chucked in a piece of wood and was bring my live center up to it when I noticed the tip was bent about 1/8" from the top.

Is this under their warranty? If so, how do I get it replaced?

Has anyone else ever experiences this problem?

>Was it bent when you took delivery? Was it damaged by you in some way? Or, was it damaged when you got it? Very important and pertinent questions in relation to asking for replacement under warranty.

>If it wasn't bent when you got it, it most likely paid a visit to the floor, point end first. I'm pretty sure it isn't covered and when it happened to me I taped the free spinning end to the morse taper and put it in the head stock. I turned on the lathe and used a metal file to grind it back into shape again.

>The tip in my Jet live center is replaceable. If the Morse taper is hollow you can try tapping it out. Drill a 3/8" hole in a piece of waste and tap it out with a long 1/4" bolt. Jet sells replacement tips for a couple dollars, but the shipping inflates the price. Woodcraft carries the tips in the stores. They are not in the catalog or web site.

>No, not damaged when I got it. Happened sometime when I was recently turning...but it boggles my mind, I never dropped it, and I never got close to it in any way while turning. It is remarkably strange.

However, I think I will try to file it to shape first, and then if that doesnt work, go the way to find a new one.

Thanks everyone!

>A suggestion to Fred's advice; for live centers with replacable tips make or have made an assortment of cheap crs tips that are threaded and some that are thin & long for support while turning deep vases etc. The threads can hold faceplates, chucks and other fitments. Extended tips get the tailstock out of the way and allow you to cut a rechucking dovetail while a bowl blank is held on a spur center.

And don't turn barefoot. :)
