>Any Jet 1642 users?..anyone have pro's & con's between the Jet 1642 & Nova DVR?..the 1642 seems like a longer bed, nice live center comes standard, stand...can you turn outboard on a Jet?..the headstock slides on the ways, but can you put on a outboard tool rest..the specs say 16 in, but can you turn larger over the edge?..the Nova you can, you buy or build a tool stand right?...Dennis

>I too have the Nova DVR. I would highly recommend it. Smooth, powerful and runs on 120 volts. No belts or pulleys, comes with a free chuck. Reverses. I'd buy it again.

>The perennial question--one which few people will agree. Here's my take having struggled with the same question a few months ago when I wanted to upgrade from my Delta 46-700. I looked at the larger Delta, Jet, and Nova. If I had bought any of them it would have been the Nova. It is more cutting edge and absolutely everybody that has one seems to love it. They seem to turn some pretty good sized things on it, too. However, after looking long and hard I decided that any of those choices was not a big enough upward move. I figured I'd want a bigger and heavier lathe before long. So I sprung for the Powermatic--figured it would last me as long as I was able to turn. So I saved a little longer and spent the extra $500 for a lathe that would last.Shop wasn't wired for 220 but it wasn't that big of job to do.

>Hey Dennis. So your getting rid of your 1442? I remember you posting the problems you were having with your headstock. Did your 1442 not have a pivoting headstock? My does and came with an outboard rest extension. I've had no problems with it allthough it still has low hours on it. I'm sure the 1642 comes with pivoting headstock and probally more accesories. Also don't overlook that the Nova outboard tool rest extension cost well over $200. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but i dont think it comes standard with it.

>I upgraded from the Delta 46-700 to an old cast Iron Jayline that I had to rebuild. It was more solid and I liked it a lot. It wasn't big enough so I bought a Nova 3000. I installed an inverter on it with a 3 phase motor. I was never really that happy with it. I built a big solid wooden stand for it but it still rocked and vibrated with out of balance pieces that werent' that large. I bought the outboard turning assembly to turn larger pieces but you had to constantly adjust the tool rest and outboard assembly to get the tool in the right position. It just wasn't the best situration.
I bought the Powermatic 2035. I've had it a year and love it. I don't turn work that large most of the time but the mass of the lathe makes it a real pleasure to turn on.

>Take a look at the General International 25-650M1, in Canada its sells for $2199.00CND so that should be about $1750USD. Its 16" X 42" swivel head, variable speed, cast iron bed, c/w stand. I've had mine for 2 months and am completely happy.

>I am a new Jet 1642 owner. Its a little brother to the PM 3520. I have chucked some 15" offcenter peices and roughed them out. I like the sliding head stock over the rotating ones. I was all set to buy the DVR when I realized for a couple more $ I could get the PM. Then found the Jet 1642 in the classified from Lee Weed. So far everything has been great. I am hooking up the vacuum chuck this weekend. I liked buying used as Lee had built the weight cabinet as Dominic designed and even better Lee spilled the first stain on the unit.
