>Crank up the lathe to the top speed, turn off the lathe and check the belt and the reeves drive (pulley) on the motor. You may need to remove some covers to do this. The belt should be riding high, almost to the top of the pulley with the belt lightly snug. If there is allot of play on the belt and the belt is riding low on the pulley, the pulley may not be closing properly. If this is the case, remove the spring and pulley from the motor shaft. Remove any debris and clean the shaft with mineral spirits, use silicone as a lubricate and reassemble. Let me know if this cures what ails ya.
been there!

>There is play in the pulley's...and I have done just what you have said, I have pulled the spring off, and removed the pulley from the shaft in the headstock, cleaned with a toothbrush, used silicon lube, and replaced the belt, I have done this myself 2 times and taken to repair shop, which they have done the same thing..Jet thinks it is the pulley's but they are not available currently...neither is the replacement for the headstock..I noticed a few days ago, I had the headstock in the shop, since getting it back, the handwheel, is not spinning round like it did before, and the knockout bar don't fit in the 3/8 hole anymore, the bar won't fit into the hole in the handwheel to knock out the drive center, haven't messed with it since..I have tried your advice a couple of times, and each time I have replaced the belt per Jets tech support. I think Jet has given up also, told me to return the lathe, and maybe a Delta is a better choice, that is the reps words not mine....Dennis

>are these post in reference to the jwl 1442 vs pro? just wondering, cause i just purchased one from woodcraft. i love it but apparentley it has some problems i didnt know about. i think it is far better than any vs (with pulley and belt) delta has on the market. espcially in ease of speed selection. am i wrong?
GOOD LATHE

>JR, I had the lathe for only a short time, and have a lot of problems, I seem to be the exception and not the rule..BUT I think my problems are common, and a lot of people will just loose the upper speeds on the lathe, saying they don't use them, for me, it is my only lathe, and turn pens, so the upper speed is nice..I am no mechanic, but I can tear down the headstock and put in back in no time, but that hasn't helped my problem..Dennis
