>Denatured alcohol is drinkable ethanol ethyl alcohol) that has had some nasty stuff added to it to render it undrinkable. There are various denaturing agents that can be used and methanol is one of them. Methanol is often referred to as wood alcohol and methyl hydrate and is commonly used for gas-line anti-freeze and fondue fuel. While readily available it is very poisonous and will kill or cause brain damage and blindness. Longer term exposure is known to cause problems with the central nervous system. IMO, it is best avoided.

The term that I think you are referring to was methylated spirits. I replied to the post saying that it seemed to me more of a British term since I had never seen it used in Canada (which doesn't necessarily mean it isn't).

I bought some denatured alcohol from a chemical store and it was labelled as DAG-2A. This stands for Denatured Alcohol Grade 2A. Canda Customs or whatever they're called these days had this listed on a website as ethanol denatured with 15% methanol. They had several grades listed with different denaturing compounds.

>On a Canadian forum some sources were Price Club and Shoppers Drug Mart. The Shoppers was supposedly 95% ethanol but was sold in 500ml bottles and wasn't cheap.

Hi Barry, if you know Heather Martin say hello to her from me.

It's ethanol in Canada. You will be able to get it from the local hardware store. I used to buy mine from Home Depot in Vancouver. It's in the paint section in one of those metal containers like a gallon of Olive oil. About $11 CAN.
