DC for 14" Jet Bandsaw

David Propst

>After an afternoon of culling my woodpile and cutting a number of turning blanks I have decided I really have to do something about dust collection on my 14" Jet bandsaw.

Delta makes an optional dust hood for their 14" BS. Has anyone adapted this to a Jet?

Any good homegrown ideas?

Thanks!

David

>I'm not familiar with the Jet but if it's anything like the older models of Elephant/Grizzly/Sears (they're all the same) I just cut a 4" hole in the bottom wheel cover and gooped, bent and sealed a 90 degree dryer vent in it then attached the hose. The biggest problem was that the cover isn't even close to airtight, not being designed for a dc. I just used duct tape to cover the big holes and areas. It gets 90% of the dust. A little still gets carried around in the teeth of the blade and drops on top of the table.

I'm not positive but I think it was Wood magazine that had a tip on making a dust collector for the Jet/Delta style 14 saws. I built one with a slight modification. I can take photos but won't be home until very late for the next 2 nights. If you e-mail me I'll get back with you about Wednesday. John

>I built a DC hood for my Delta out of a four inch End boot for ductwork. Fits right on where the plastic dust port came on the machine. No need to hack a hole in the door. I can send a pic if you want. Sits exactly where the Delta hood would sit, but cost $5 rather than $32. Gets about ninety percent.

>David,

In the Shop Shots section here on WC, I wrote an article on upgrading my Jet bandsaw and fabricating a dust shroud for a 14" Jet Bandsaw. I even provide copies of the plans you can download.

I've been resawing with this Jet saw for a while now (my brother STILL hasn't come over to claim it), and the dust shroud works like a charm.

See ya around,

Dominic

>On the drop to my Jet bandsaw, I have a wye. The four inch hose goes to a metal flange that is bolted to the door. I got the flange from Onedia along with all the other ductwork. I cut a hole in the door and bolted the flange to it. I fabricated a gasket from a rubber pad that I had. The other side of the wye has a two inch hose which goes to the pickup on the front of the machine. I also use this as a shopvac to clean the table off, which is the best use for the two inch hose. I think the dust port that comes on the machine is just a convient place to keep the two inch hose hooked to, the real dust collection being done by the 4 inch hose.

With this setup I really don't have a dust problem with my bandsaw anymore.
