>Can someone tell me if there is a difference between "white holly" and "holly"? Are these two seperate types just like walnut and black walnut, or are they the same? Thanks. Matt

>The "Christmas card Holly" is American holly which has the botanical name of Ilex opaca, and it has a very white wood. I suspect that someone's reference to it as "white holly" is their attempt at marketing the wood's color. English hollies are just as white, but they may not get as large.

>Sometimes holly will have a gray heartwood. I just sawed one of two hugh chunks of holly last week. The boards are 14 1/2" wide (not my holly :-(). Most have a very interesting heartwood pattern. The two smaller pieces are mostly white. Drying holly to keep the whiteness can be a challenge. I was told the other day that vacuum drying will keep the white the best. I have kiln dried and air dried holly under a tin roof both with good results.
