Lathe score, how'd I do?

Rod Peterson -- Ormond Beach

>Walked into Woodcraft in Casselberry (Orlando) today, mainly on a fact finding trip while SWMBO and friend did a mall. Just inside the door was a Delta 46-700 marked "used in class, as is, $249." What should I have done?

(image of a new one, not the actual one)

What I did was ask if it worked and would they plug it in. They did and it did. No manual, no drive center, no pokes-through-the-drive-spindle-to-knock-out-the-drive-spur-thingy. Well, the manual is available online, the drive center is a #2 MT, same as my Jet Mini, and the p-t-t-d-s-t-k-o-t-d-s-t can be made of most anything.

According to Amazon, the lathe is $479.99 and the stand is another $54.99total=$534.98.

I hauled out the Visa and hauled 'er outta there. Goodby Craftsman, hello Delta.

Should I be sorry?

Rod

>I saw a guy buy a delta steel bed in the box today from the Charlotte Woodcraft store. He had to put his together when he got home and the price tag I saw on it was $649.

I'd have bought one today at $249 probably. Less than the price of a variable speed Jet midi.

How's the asking forgiveness rather than permission working for you tonight?

Actually...

...cell phones make things much easier. I knew it was a bargain and I was pretty confident she'd be okay with it. We just sold our old Explorer, so had some cash in hand, and with the ongoing success of the house remodel, I'm almost guaranteed approval on any tool under $500.

Still, one makes the gestureit was approved.

>My wife's attitude is that if I make a piece and sell it, I don't have to ask her when I spend the profit. That profit usually ends up in the hands of a woodworking supplier somewhere. It's strange how I usually have it spent by the time I get the money in hand.

Luckily my wife manages all the other family income. If it was the other way around, I'd probably have a nicer shop than house.

It looks like you got a good bargain there. Enjoy turning with it and be safe.

>Hi Rod,

I think you will be well pleased with the Delta. I have the earlier model 45-700 and it has always done what I've asked it to do. Like most Reeves drives, it is easy to stall at low RPM, but you can learn to live with that.

By the way, I think I paid $350 for mine about 3 years ago and it was well used at the time.

>To take this a little further...Ray saw one go out the door at $649., you got this one for $249. That means you saved $400. Cripes, you could buy a couple more chucks and still be ahead! Now THAT'S bargain shopping logic!

>I'm real cheap. I would have said I'd be glad to take it off your hands only if it had a knock out rod and a revolving center. If he said no, I'd still take it. =o)

Ya done good!

>I bough an old model 700 like this several years ago and customized it for demos when I have to bring a lathe. Mine has 2" riser blocks and a cut off bed now, and it serves the occasional use purpose well. BTW, a poly V belt really knocked out some of the Reeves drive pully noise!

>Call the 1-800-number and they will send you the missing parts. I picked up a mini two years ago missing parts and it had a cracked switch box. The vendor told me to call them. The parts were sent to my house within a few days.

I am in Canada but I am sure the policy would be the same in the USA.

Where did you get the poly belt for your 45-700?

Thanks,

>Hi Rod,

Good pick up! Like others have said, that's less than the cost of a mini! Even if you only ever use it for a spindle lathe, I think it is well worth it.

Enjoy your new lathe!
