jet mini ?

Richard H.

>My end goal is to purchase a 1640 oneway at the end of the year. However it is currently outside my budget and I need to turn some table legs.

My question is; if I purchase a Jet mini with an extension would it be adequate to turn 16" to 32" spindles with a maximum diameter of five inches.

I know i could get into a lathe with less cost but because I don't know much about them, I tend to purchase the best I can afford. My logic..? is that way I will aviod the majority of design build, fit and finish issues.

I appreciate your feedback

Thanks

Richard

I don't know for sure about the Jet but I've turned them on my Nova comet which is physically the same size. I added a short bed extension so I could turn 24" between centers. I don't see why it wouldn't turn up to 30 or 32. Mine has a 1/2 horse motor that is physically bigger than the Jet but I don't have any idea if it't more powerful.

>A Jet VS mini with bed extension might do what you want. The operative term is might. I have turned a 2-3" leg with a 1/2 hp motor before. It did fine. 5" is a bit more wood, so I don't know. But then again, back in the old pole lathe days, they turned some fairly large things. My $0.02.

>I have a jet mini and have turned as large as 7"diameter by 13" long, (I dont have the bed extension) it was a chore for the little beast, but then I always did like getting things fixed under warrenty just before warrenty expires.

My friend has one with the bed extension, it looks like it will manage 32" no sweat.
