Drive pully question

Jim Bodin

>I purchased a die cast drive pully (4 speed) from McMaster for a my Craftsman cast iron lathe. It give too much vibration (I can see the motor jumping). Where can I buy a pully that would be suitable for the lathe or should I take the die cast one to a machinest and see if it can be turned to get rid of the vibration? I'm assuming that it is out of round. If one can be purchased, where? Thanks

A few things come to mind

worn key/key way

loose motor

worn belt

I agree with Ron. It is probably something else. Often it's the belt but I found that I had to tension the motor slightly to stop the vibration. I took my pulleys to a machinist, I had the drive shaft checked, I did everything including swapping belts and going with a segmented belt. The only thing that worked was to apply some downward force on the motor mount to tension the belt a little.

>I have the segmented belt, I'll try tension, now the only tension is the motor hanging free. Thanks.
