Pepper Mills

>Good Morning All,

I'm just getting in to turning, and our old pepper mill is about ready for the trash. Could someone give me a website or a company that sells the mechanism for a pepper mill, or a kit with a salt shaker and pepper mill combo would be even better.

Thanks in advance, Ken

>Rockler sells a grinder mechanism, which includes the shaker top and plug for a salt shaker. We use one daily, and it does fine. I have not used the one in the link below, but it looks interesting, so I may try it next time I make a mill.

>The crush grind mechanism is probably the best peppermill you will ever use... and what it really nice is that the adjustment mechanism is on the bottom so that you can make a solid top with no screwpost exposed...

SWMBO used to complain about the little bits of pepper on the table from the old one.. now with a solid top, we just put the mill on the table upside down... of course the mechanism shows but SWMBO is happier about the clean table... I still prefer it with the top up... LOL.. but then again we all know that "men are slobs" .. LOL

The only tricky part to using this mechanism is the way it fits in the wood.. you need to cut a groove in the wood at the right depth because the mechanism snaps in place... this is not all that hard to do.. I made a tool out of a concrete nail to do it.. just bent at 90 degrees and sharpened like a scraper...

>I've made a few Pepper-mills with the traditional mechanisms, and originally had to buy all the different Forster bits to accommodate them. Then, I ordered one of the new Crushgrind mechanisms, only to find out it uses completely different drill sizes. (Bummer) So I haven't built a Pepper-mill with the Crushgrind yet.

It might be worth getting the new bits because the Crushgrind mechanism has a couple of neat features. It can be used for both a Salt and Pepper grinder, and like someone mentioned, it doesn't need the screw on the top thingy. Plus once the grind preference is set, it shouldn't ever need re-adjusting.

>Ken,

I've purchased a few from Chef Specialties. These are the "standard" type grinders.
