sometimes you can find big non turning headstock lathes for short money.. saw a big 3 phase delta variable speed go for 500$ a week ago..
keep the tube lathe.. you can make it into a dedicated buffing station..

>Look over in the Classifieds. There are several lathes for sale there. I have one for sale in Virginia. Also, Nova/Teknatool has a guy in West Virginia that is their "local" Rep. Tim Geist I believe. He offered me a deal on a number of lathes and had I known about his stock of used lathes I might have bought one rather than the new DVR I bought.

>I went through this a year ago. After comparing the Jet 1442 and the Nova 3000 side by side at my local Woodcraft, I bought the Jet. Still believe it's the best for under a grand. It has cast iron legs the Nova 3000 lacks, a more substantial bed casting (longer too), pivoting headstock, and mechanical variable speed (no belt changes). The Nova has a beefier spindle. My major beef is the 450 rpm lowest speed is too fast for finishing.
