>One of my best Texas buddy`s father is a preacher for one of the churches I mentioned in passing(and maybe shouldn`t have). His nickname is CD Walton for "Can`t Dance".

If I had wanted to stir things up I could have told one of the many jokes we used to rib him with but I was trying to be polite.Should have known better I guess.

Seems wherever I go lately there are people willing to line up to try and put my foot in my mouth for me.Funny how someone can always pull one small thing from someone`s post or conversation and make the whole thing a politicly incorrect touchpoint, thus missing the point completely.

Mark Mandell - Gone Round In Jersey

>Bob, 'pears you have a propensity for tap-dancing on land mines. There's a world of people out there who defend to the death their unalienable right to be repressed and denied life's simple and harmless pleasures in exchange for a better spot in the next one.

If you insist on waving your Blue Suedes in their face, all you're gonna get is an unending stream of polite and well dressed knocks on your door.

Peace

How`d this get up here?

Bob Hackett

>Thanks Mark,point taken.

But dancing feels SO good. How can it be wrong?

Maybe I`ll just do it when nobody`s looking(or listening);^)

>Hey Bob,

I can tell this one because my Dad is a Baptist minister and he thought it was hilarious.

Q: Do you know why Baptists won't have sex standing up?

A: Because someone might think they are dancing.

My apologies for any offense.

>Bob, I'm glad you brought it up, maybe it will affect the way I approach teaching folks to turn. When this thread popped up initially, it struck a chord with me because one of the main points I make is that you have to dance with the lathe to get fair curves. It has helped me effectively illustrate the movement necessary to turn beads and shapes. No one has complained up to now, but maybe I need to look for a different analogy, huh? Not just trying to be PC, but don't want to offend anyone, either.

Personally, I liked this thread, and the song is one that runs through my head often as I stand at the lathe and dance with the wood.

Being PC and getting things done

Bob Hackett

>It`s my belief that if you worry about being PC then you`ll get nothing done.I find that folks who are truly interested in learning will listen to the message and not get distracted by the words.

I just explain that a steady cut and fair curve are easier to accomplish while moving your whole body rather than just the arms/hands.It`s more about the support of having the tool in contact with your body than it is the dance.

One student commented that it was like watching Tai-Chi(sp),which also developes balance and smooth fluid movement,so he says.

The one thing I find frustrating about turning on a Oneway is that the bed gets in the way.I find I can`t get near as nice a shape as easily as I can on my bowl lathe.

Hard to dance when you`re constantly bouncing off large metal objects.I can`t get into it if I keep being interrupted.

All this PC talk brings to mind my old 1st Sgt`s talk about the categories of people.They are as follows;

1-People who make things happen

2-People who watch things happen

3-People who wonder what happened

I`ve since added a forth category;

4-People who stop things from happening

In my estimation, most PC folks belong in this category.

Re: If the word "dance" is objectionable...

>All good suggestions, guys, but they just don't convey the same picture, do they? I doubt that too many will object, and I also feel that at some point we all need to take some kind of stance against intolerance, or whatever is the flavor of the month, of any kind. Judgemental attitudes serve only to restrict others, not to empower them. Let's all take a lesson learned from Russ, who did such a phenomenal job as moderator of this forum, with his even-handed administration and kind tutelage. We lost him for just such reasoning, those that complain about something which pushes their panic button. Fully, they have the right to complain about these matters, but they also must remember that the rest of us have the right to disagree and / or pursue life as we choose. Folks who complain about subject matter in the media, such as myself, must also understand that we all have the right to turn the damned thing off if something offends our sensibilities. The same concept applies here on WC. It would help if the folks who read here would stop taking moral stands and forcing their opinions and beliefs on others. Again, we all have the same rights and privileges. This is just not the proper place to exercise them, in my humble opinion. It only creates division and strife in such an otherwise tight and enjoyable community.

What did I miss?!?

Bill Grumbine, Kutztown PA

>Boy I go away and spend time at the lathe and things get exciting around here. So I missed all the stuff about dancing, eh? Don't make me get my tutu out again! I do not necessarily use the imagery of dancing with the lathe, but rather tend to sports images - body language, follow through, etc. But, I think dancing fits. I do not know who wrote what, or what positions were taken, but dancing with the lathe , while it might sound a bit fanciful, is hardly akin to cannibals dancing around a pot full of missionary stew.

I guess we could call it dirty dancing, ala Patrick Swayze. I doubt anyone is getting vulgar (a mental image I do not want to form of most of you), but we certainly get covered with shavings and dust. Of course, if a piece goes flying off the lathe, then it would be break dancing, right? If we are sharpening a tool and a hot spark goes down our shirt, then it would be hip hop dancing, at least for a couple of minutes. And when it comes to sweettalking SWMBO into yet another expensive tool, I guess we would be waltzing through the objections. And finally, when we have insisted on staying at the lathe too long, and the call of nature becomes insistent, we do the foxtrot all the way in to the house. And with that one, I will stop. My card is full.

Re: If the word "dance" is objectionable...

Russ Fairfield

>Arch, that's what I learned to call them, and they are still called by those names in the Starrett catalog.

You forgot to mention the names for files. These is the common "Bastard", the "Mill Bastard", the "Half Bastard", and the "Smooth Bastard". If you object to seeing these words, I would caution against going into a machine shop, a shop supply, or ever opening the Nicholson catalog, because these are the words that are stenciled into the tang of the file. And then there are those who would object to my use of the word "tang". But then, I have to wonder how, with their purity of mind, they know of that meaning.

If we cannot use common words because they injure someones sensibilities, then we may as well quit talking and turn wood.

Re: Can`t dance? I'M SORRY

Big Mike (In SW Indiana)

>Bob

This whole thing about dancing, has been blown out of proportion I enjoyed the words to I hope you Dance to the extent that I used them as part of my message last night at church

I tried to post an apology but the moderator stopped it I just wanted you to know that I neither took offence at what you said or meant any in return; I guess my wording could have been better but again I meant no harm as I realized you did not I was just trying to point out that there was some reasoning behind our code of conduct not for you for me

I enjoy the forum never dreamed I would stir up the hornets nest I did. I AM SORRY

Other than my family I have three passions

Church

Turning

Bass fishing

From now on. If I post. After the smoke clears from this mess. I will post about nothing but turning no matter what the thread

Me too

Bob Hackett

>No offense taken Mike.

It seems that whenever religion comes up things will likely blow up.I was the one to mention churches first so if anyone started anything it was most likely me and I should have known better.

Please accept my appology if I had touched a nerve with any part of my post as that was not my intention.I`ll try to remember to stay away from any religious references in the future.

Now where did I put that list of things I`m supposed to remember?
