Spalted Red Oak

Ed Karch

>I picked up a piece of red oak to fill out a load of wood from the recycle center. They grind it all up into mulch, but allow you to rescue pieces. This set out all summer before I got to process and seal it. The sapwood had spalted leaving the more resistant heartwood intact. This called for an end grain bowl to show off this unusual effect.

Seriously...that is cool. I like how you oriented the piece to show off that spalted figure. Great recycling job!

When I first read the title, I was not prepared for how cool this looked. I was floored when I saw this!

You really did a great job of orienting the grain to show off those spalt lines.

Nice job!

See ya around,

Dominic
