Buffing Question

Brian McKearney

>I purchased the Beall Buffing System about a month ago and I buff turned items on the lathe. I've noticed that there seems to be a lot of static electricity buildup when I buff items on the lathe - so much that I get a shock when I touch the lathe after the buffing wheel has stopped. Have others observed this? Also, is this harmful to the motor/inverter on my lathe?

>Happens to me too when it's really dry. (Which, except for this winter, is pretty typical in Arizona) Anyhow, I use a piece of wire with two alligator clips--one clipped to my metal band wristwatch and one clipped to the lathe--to drain off the charge to avoid the shocks.
