Pattern transfer method(s) ?

Mike Schwing from Md.

>I wish to transfer a rudimentary lizard/snakeskin like pattern to a three dimensional object as an underlayer for airbrushing over with transparent colors.

I'm not good enough with the airbrush to paint the pattern by hand. Had considered the possibility of using those nylon mesh bags for oranges as a pattern and spraying over/through it, but that will really give me the negative image of what I desire.

The object is 3D, so a press iron/heat transfer type of method will not work.

Can anyone think of a way to do this? Thanks.

>Find what you like in an image and enhance it with your favorite photo editing software (Photoshop, GIMP, etc) Print it out and get a sharp xacto knife.

Another option if this will prove to be profitable upon completion is to have your local vinyl sign company cut the negative out of vinyl with their plotter. Apply the vinyl as needed. Clean up with an xacto knife and go to work with the airbrush. This option could be costly but it may add to the bottom line of the piece as well.

Good luck.

are you wanting dark lines for the snake skin? You could try using a fine line marker or one of the permanant ink pens. You could have a rubber stamp made. Around here they are about $20.

My friend Graham Campbell does a pattern similar using silk and or pantyhose but I don't know how he get the black lines. If I see him in the next day or so I'll ask.

How about making or buying a woodburning bit that is the shape of one of the patterns. All you would need is a sort of half round burner.

Base coat of black

>Mike, You could paint with a base coat of black and then use the onion sack with a lighter color. This would leave the black lines you are wanting.

Another thing, would be to paint from an extreme angle to the onion cloth.

Just a thought.

>Years ago, when I was making my own fishing lures, I bought some mesh transfer screen from one of the sporting goods suply outfits, possibly Cabella"s. It gave a nice scale pattern with an air brush.

>Mike, the Razertip wood buring system has a "transfer pen" which is about 3/16th of an inch in a heart shape. If you made a xerographic copy of your pattern, you could tape it on the object and from the back side, use the pen to transfer the image onto the wood. I have used this method to transfer images of animals onto wood and then burn the image into the surface.
