First Bowl

Heather A

>Hello all. This is my first all-on-my-own bowl. I made a couple in classes including the first which turned out to be a funnel after I turned through the bottom. It is maple 4 1/2 x 1 5/8. Right now it just has a coat of wax on it. I am going to put it in a local contest tomorrow (I figure that at least they will need things to judge against!) and I was wondering if there is some finish that I could put on that could be handled in 12 or so hours. I have seal coat shellac, BLO and danish oil here handy.

Thanks also to you all for your inspiration and information you provide through this site.

>Heather,

You have a winner there whether you take 1st place or not! That's the best 1st bowl I think I've ever seen. Put the shellac on. I'd just put one coat on since you need it now.

Outstanding first bowl. Nice color and great shape. Don't oil it if you like the color as it is. Oil will turn it yellow. I prefer Watco natural to BLO.

>That's a really nice looking bowl. Great shape. The lines are great and the wood just adds to the simple form. You've definitely got a winner there.

Good luck!

>You studied well in class Heather, great shape! Your photography is also much better than my first photo.

I would use the shellac also, the blonder the better.

>Escellent 1st try! Great shape, proportions, and finish. You'll need alcohol to remove tha wax and I'd use the shellac and then the wax as a protecting coat. I personally prefer the slight orange the shalleac gives, kind of like a warm tone instead of boring white.

>Great bowl for a first try or any try. I am impressed.

I would be leary of trying to change the finish on short notice. I think I would put it in the contest with just the wax. It is beautiful the way it is. There is a chance you will struggle with getting all the wax off and another finish on. Try that after you win the ribbon.

>If only my first bowl turned out that well. I especially like the delicate base. If you started off this well, I'd like to see your work one year from today.

I agree with Barry. Keep Mr. Murphy out of it until after the event.

Thanks!

>Thanks for the kind compliments. I'm all warm and fuzzy inside now! I think I will take the advise about leaving it as it is for now. I would rather be able to take my time since I will be learning finishing too. I am already hooked thanks to a great teacher and even greater husband who buys all my tools! I really wanted to get some practice in before our local woodturning symposium. I will be taking a beginning bowl turning class from Mike Mahoney. I am so excited!

>Well, after looking at some of the other entries today I am not expecting any prizes but I was proud to enter anyway and it only cost a buck for the entry fee. I thought they had different catagories for skill level but they don't. I would have probably not entered if I had know that before hand but I had fun just supporting the efforts of our club.

Heather.
