Triton or Trend??

Triton or Trend??

Bill MacLachlan

>My 3M Powervisor will need replacing soon and I am wondering what the consensus is for a replacement? I am leaning towards the Triton because I like the idea of the dual filters and a pre-filter. I also like that the unit hides behind your back, maybe less dust. But I do not know about the hard hat and hose idea.

Anybody use them both and can compare?

Thanks, Bill

>I have the Triton but haven't used a Trend so I can't give a comparison. Trend had a rather stiff hose when it first came out such that it wanted to tilt the helmet. They listened to the complaints and now have a very flexible hose and offered a retrofit kit at low cost to their customers.

I don't have any problem with the helmet and I feel that my head is well protected in case of a flying tree trunk. I don't usually snap down the hearing protection but it is there if I want it.

One design flaw as seen by some users is the batteries are not in a separate pack. They are, I'm told, sold with the motor as a unit.

>I looked at both and decided on the Trend, mainly because I thought the Triton's belt pack would be too much trouble to put on. I have been very happy with the Trend and would buy it again, though I never did get an opportunity to try the Triton. It's as easy to put on as a regular faceshield and not much heavier, which means I use it. It would be nice if it had earmuffs like the Triton though - power sanding can get noisy.

I bought the Trend because it was 'one piece'. I have found that when I use the CA glue I turn the fan off because it sucks the fumes into the mask. Maybe the Triton would not do this since the intake in on the back. My wife really likes it because I snore less. It was pricey, but cheaper than a divorce:>) Wayne Cooper, Charlotte NC

Thanks for info.

>It sounds like it is a toss up. You guys like the ones you are currently using. I am leaning towards the Triton. Also thanks for the tip on the CA fumes. I found that yesterday when I was doing some repairing on some punky wood. Off to try my first platter tonight!!

>Bill I have the Triton here, purchased it last month and so far just love it. I should have had it years ago. The thing that really sold me on it was the fact that it had hearing protection and one could place the ear muffs away from his ears if they were not required. I have a dust collector running most of the time and always running when I'm sanding, so you can understand why I favored Triton. I quite often don't operate the dust collector while rough turning (green timber) and therefore don't require the hearing protection. I did and earlier posting on my purchase last month but can't remember if it was here or another forum, it may have been the Wood magazine forum. It's correct what the others are saying and yes Triton did have hose problems but have updated their later models with a more flexible hose and better connections. If you decide to get the Triton make sure it has the updated hose and connections. By the way Woodturning Design did a product review of the Triton, fall 2004 issue. Good luck on which ever one you choose.
