Butternut Shallow Bowlw/pic

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Good morning everybody,

It's late night at work and I thought I post a picture of another recent bowl of mine. I was trying to copy the form of a ceramic bowl that I have here at my house. This is a piece of butternut crotch. It was really nice wood to turn. I had a hard time getting the light up underneath the bowl so I'm not sure if you can see the exact form that the bowl has. The outside walls are steeper than the inside which makes it almost a platter.

This one is about 13" diameter and about 3" tall. It is finished with 2 coats of Rockler wipe on gel poly so far. I will probably put a couple more on and then a coat of Lee Valley Conservators wax. Comments welcome as always.

Thanks for looking.

Jennifer

>Hi Jen,

Wonderful shape!! That is a beauty!!

I have never turned Butternut. Did you have any problem with tearout? I have heard this can happen sometimes. But not often with someone that has your skills. :)

Wonderful work!!

Dave

Very good shape. The grain of the wood stands out well. I have a butternut table but I've never turned it. Your getting a handle on the photography it looks good. John

>Hi Jen,

A simple and elegant shape, wonderfully done.

I turned a piece of butternut years ago, it was a nice wood, but then again as a rank novice I can not tell you of the qualities of the wood vs. my lacking skills.

I know I speak for many here when I say we really enjoy seeing your current works.

Take care,

Jim

>Thanks Jim :)

It's a new shape for me....I'm glad you like it. I was tempted to do some buring or texturing to the rim, but then I chickened out...and just left it as is.

Tearout

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Hi Dave,

Hey Thanks!...I loved the butternut. It was really nice to turn, but I did have one spot about the size of pea, that has some bizzare tearout. I couldn't figure it out? There was no apparent change in grain or anything? I'd sharpen my tool and the same thing? So I just took care of it as best I could with the sandpaper.

Thanks again for your kind comments :)

>Jennifer,

This is a gorgeous bowl. I really like how it is presented. Very elegant. I know how difficult butternut can be to turn. I would love to hold this bowl and experience it first-hand.

Hi Jennifer

Dominic Greco at home in Richboro, PA

>Jennifer,

Sorry I didn't get the chance to respond to this sooner.

I really like the form. I think that the rim is a very nice touch. Gives it an "elegant" air.

I would love to see a "aerial" view of the bowl just to get a better idea of how cool the grain looks.

See ya around,

Dominic

>Thank you Dom :)

I'll see if I have one....I tore down the light box so if I didn't take one from that angle it might be a while....I need a permanent set up in the basement....really bad!
