First cherry bowl

>I've lurked around here for a while and have had moderate success with bowls. I finally have one that I am willing to post here amongst the incredible work I see here.

Its a cherry bowl with a bit of heart and sapwood. its about 5 1/2" diameter and about 3 inches or so high. A month ago it was a log. I used the alcohol protocol for drying. I had two in this batch. the other one had a bark pocket buried in it that I didnt find till I was well into the roughing process. It dried ok but a catch on the final turnign caused it to take flight in the garage in pieces. This one turned out much better.

My photo skills leave much to be desired so no comments on that. I would however like comments and critiques.

Sanded through 400. Mylands sealer and than 4 or 5 coats of Mylands High build Friction polish.

Thanks

>Pretty bowl. Nice coloration and size. Gentle sweep on the inside with a nice balance to the wall thickness. How did you do the foot?

>Dean, this is a beautiful bowl. Hard to believe it is your first. Your picked a great wood to make a bowl, I also like working with cherry. Looking forward to viewing many more of your bowls.

>You've done a nice job as far as I can tell from the picture. The wood is very nice. Didn't it smell good as you worked it? The smell alone makes cherry one of my favorites.

It looks like you have a great curve going from top to bottom on the inside. I believe that you will like your work better if the outside takes more of a curve rather than the straight sides I'm seeing in the pic. Generally, you will want the inside and outside to mirror eachother.

Over all, I would say you did a real nice job. Thanks for sharing it with the rest of us.

Turn 'em round,

>thansk for the comment. I used a 9" disc on the faceplate and grooved a ring for the lip of the bowl and than just taped the bowl to it. Than using very very light passes and a very sharp bowl gouge took care of the bottom. There was minimal to remove as I parted it off of the chuck first. Or rather I got close to it parting off and than because I was to chicken to go all the way and let the bowl go flying I cut off the last 1/2" or so with dovetail saw.

>Really pretty, Dean! Sure do like that cherry. I just got up the nerve to try a bowl today and it was a disaster! LOL I'll keep pluggin' away though.
