Hollowing system

Bud Gabaree

>Hey all,

I'm almost done with the hollowinh system I've been putting together. The system is based on the Jamieson system in the Craft Supplies catalog.

The last thing I have to do is weld the collor that holds the boring bar onto the stabilizer handle. Then it occurred to me that, since I've never used or even seen used this system, I don't know which way the handle should face when captured in the secondary tool rest. Should the boring bar side be closest to me at the lathe or should the outrigger side be closest? I don't necessarily trust the photo in the catalog.

Please help a brother out, and thanks.

Bud

I put mine on the what is the backside of the lathe so the boring bar is next to me. Now that I've used it awhile I am considering moving it to the other side. The reason is on certain vessel shapes I run out of secondary tool rest room and have to stop and adjust the tool rest. If it was on the other side it would work for this but then it might get in the way for the initial hollowing of the neck.

Fortunately I put the collar on the stabilizing bar with roll pins instead of welding it so I can simply knock these out reverse the whole thing and give it a try to see if I like it on the other side.

I did cut my stabilizer bar in half. I left the length alone but I decided that it didn't need to be that wide so I cut it down to 5" total width.

>Bud, I too have the Jamison boring bar closer to me, and have noticed that the outrigger portion restricks the swing of the tool when I try to get wide on the left side of the neck of a vase. So, I think it might work better the other way.

>I am not fully familure with this system. But if it is a matter of which side the setserews will be on, why not tap both sides. That way you have a reversable unit and can "Have it your way"

>I have just finished building Al Crandall's rig and it has the boring bar on the back side. Seems it gives more access to the hard-to-reach top area.
