>Hi Barb

The Ailanthus turns just fine, it is not hard wood but it did not give me any problems.

The tree I picked up was approx. 2 feet across the bottom cut, the wood dries really funny, there is a year ring where the sap wood turns to hard wood, it has a darker more intense yellow color, that one year layer dries more than either sap or hard wood along side it, the early /late wood dries at different amounts, more than other woods i've experience with , it also some times has local dry ins (for I have no better way to describe it).

I have several rough turned bowls in my drying cabin, I should get one out and make picture, that will give you a better Idea.

The tree is a very fast growing tree, at least the one I had was.

Yet when dry it is very stable, we have a 16" shallow bowl on our kitchen table and it hasn't moved at all.

Thats about it I think.

Have fun and take care

>Leo, I know what you mean. It is the only wood that seems to dry better flat sawn than quartersawn.
