Hammered Maple Bowl w/pic

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Hi Everybody,This is my first attempt at hammering. I bought a little air hammer at Lowes and ground the pointy chisel that came with it to a more rounded end instead of a point. I think I might even grind it down a bit more. I also need to play with the pressure from the compressor a bit too... As in lower it. you can see where the hammer got a way from me a few times and I nicked the edges.

Overall I like this first attempt. It looks a bit more industrial than anything I've ever turned but I suppose that's to be expected when you hammer away at it. It's a piece of maple about 9" across and 4" high. I used Indian Ink for the rim. I dyed it before I hammered. I wasn't sure in which order to do that since I'd never done it before. It seemed to work out okay. I dyed and hammered still in the chuck on the lathe. After I got started, I wondered if that might not be a good idea. The hammering seems a bit violent at times. I hope there's no chance of damaging my bearings or chuck? I might hold the chuck in my bench vise from now on. I would not recommend it for someone with carpel tunnel or sensitive ears! Ouch! After all the surface treatments I finished the bottom and dyed the foot black too. I thought that might add a nice touch bringing the rim color down to the bottom. Finished with 4 wipe on coats of Rockler wipe on gel poly, and 0000 steel wool in between. All comments encouraged please! Thanks for looking :)

>I like this. I like the idea and I think you've done a good job. I wonder if that hammered/colored rim should be thinner, that is, not as wide top to bottom. I think the rim diameter from inside to outside is good. I like it, it's similar to something that I've been doing, though I've kept the texturing to the top of the rim and not extended down the side. I guess that's why I noticed and made the comment regarding the "thickness" of it. Good job!

>Hi Jennifer

Looks terrific. I will likely imitate this for a future piece. I read over on WoW that oiling the surface before hamering softens the wood and helps to keep the wood from splintering. Did you notice any splintering or have any concern for splintering?

Thanks

Richard

>Hi Richard...that would be the kindest form of flattery :)

I did fail to mention that I lather up the bowl pretty good with Danish Oil prior to hammering. I wasn't sure what would happen to the India ink but it stayed put. I had recalled reading that too. I think Molly gave that bit of advice. I was glad I did it, because there were a couple of places where I did break the fibers and then I soaked that divot with oil and it puffed back up :)

>For the same type of texture on a finer level try a needle scaler. The work goes quickly as the are 2 dozen points doing the work instead of 1.They`re easier to control too,not so much bounce.

If you are looking for a well defined, undented edge with this texture then leave extra waste wood as a border and containment channel for the tool.Even if it gets away from you and dents the adjoining surface you`re going to turn it off later anyway.

I`ve always liked this type of texture and you`ve done an excellent job of it here.I think the dents along the edge break up the starkness of a sharp edge and give it personality.

I see you`re exploring more of the extra heavy wall "bowl within a bowl" look.

How do you like them?Quite a departure aren`t they?

>Hi Bob,

Thanks for your kind comments. I would like to get a scaler...but the ones I've seen are pretty pricey$130-150range). I didn't want to sink a bunch of $$ into this texturing experiment. I thought Id look at a pawn shop or two to see if I can find a used scaler. I think that's what John Jordon uses for his texturing and I really love the look of his.

Thanks again!

>Hi Mike,

Thanks :)

I thought the same thing too about the thickness of the rim. You're not the first to say that either. I think after I put the India ink on it ..it looked a lot thicker than just plain? I thought black was suppose to make you thinner?

>That's cool! I really like the contrasts of color and textures. I might try something like that, but of finer texture of course, on my turkey calls.

Keep up the good work.
