? re glue-ups

>I've often seen the suggestion to use part of a brown paper bag between pieces of wood to facilitate later separation (when turning has been completed). My question: Would newspaper or bond printing paper or any other kind of paper (please describe it) do the job as well?

>Newsprint and bond might be to light.

Brown paper bags/rolls work the best. Next would be vellum bristol, but that is more expensive.

When in doubt, experiment!

>I'm assuming you're referring to gluing glue blocks. I suggest that you use no paper at all. Paper will weaken the glue joint and serves no purpose. Instead, when turning is completed, part the piece off with a parting tool. Part it along the glue line until you're able to pop the the piece off with the heel of your hand.

>Hi Shel

The brown paper will glue to each surface without glueing through the paper. When you seperate at the paper joint there will be brown paper on each piece. The brown paper actualy splits in two.

Newsprint won't split in two. In fact the glue can cross the paper boundry and cross link the glue block to the turning blank.

The only time I would consider using a paper joint is with the inside part of an inside out turning. There are to many better (more secure and faster) ways to attach wood to the lathe.

The brown paper bag glue joint is worth while trying because it is something that works and is a nice addition to your options when mounting wood. So is double face tape, peremiter glueing of a glue block, chucking, screw chuck, pin chuck, between centers, vacume chucking, jam chucking, compresion chucking, donut chucking, button chucking and a few others I can't think of right now.

The more options you have the better chance you have of mounting that unusual hunk of wood to yeild the turning you are hopeing to achieve.

Good Luck

Richard

>I do a lot of split turnings and newspaper works just fine. In fact I did a test one day on a bunch of different papers and the only one that didn't work well was water color paper. It was just too tough and didn't split well.

As others have said I wouldn't use it between bowls and a faceplate. I have done platters that way but I have a lot of experience turning platters and don't usually get any catches.

>I don't use any glue for split turnings, at least where you want the turning to become two halves. Just make the two blanks 3" longer on each end and glue only the extra wood which will become scrap when sawn off.
