custom banjo

>I have the Jet 1014. I have been thinking about a hollowing gate. But talking to the Kelton folks I have been told that a 5/8th inch tool post and the cast iron banjo on my Jet may not stand the gaff. So...

I am wondering if anyone makes, or has had made, a custom banjo for the Jet 1014 ways (or any other lathe, for that matter).

Ideally, I'd like a thinner banjo (to reduce the loss of swing) but stouter...stronger...maybe made from good steel bar and perhaps even a 3/4" tool post. Of course the banjo has to fit and tighten down on the ways of the Jet.

Anyone got any ideas?

>I have heard of some using a Oneway banjo on a Jet mini. I don't think you would gain any swing with that banjo.

I have to think that replacing the banjo on a Jet Mini is a msiguided use of funds DAMHIKT. If you are maxing out your mini then perhaps it is time to start saveing for your next lathe. Use the money you would otherwise spend on the mini as the start of your lathe fund for the upgrade.

Of course in a year you could be asking about outboard toolrest so you can turn a 26" hunk of maple.

BTW I would prefer the weak links in the lathe to progress from the cheapest parts to the most expensive parts. This is to say, it the banjo can'r break then what is it that WILL break?

Good Luck

>If you want a seriously stout and strong banjo, get one from Oneway. I had one for my Jet 1236 (sold) and I have one for my pattern makers lathe (its from the Oneway 1640 model). Serious metal, for sure.
