>Hi Mike, Great post,
One of my first turnings was this piece of red elm, I had no clue about shape or how to finish the foot.
Take care,

>Nice Cob web...
This is about as good as I was too, I tried to make a cane once, I discoved the issues around harmonics and vibration...I see you didn't have that challenge with this one...nice finish!
Take care,
Jim
My first turning

>Done from a rescued 20 year old piece of firewood, it is Oak and very hard. What a way to start. Made a nice vase though. Of course I had to cheat a bit with getting the curve in the opening, I was getting nothing but grief till I just resorted to sanding with my Dremel.
And the first bowl

>Even more exciting, this was from a downed tree I found cut up on the road on Easter. Made of cherry about 7", I did it in one shot, too eager to rough it out and let it sit for a few months. Not a bad bowl, it has warped slightly but I plan on keeping it as a nice reminder

Here's my first,..eh....bowl

If you really want to stretch the definition of the word "bowl". It's turned from some pear wood given to me by my Dad back when I first got my old Jet JWL-1236 lathe.
In back you can see a "cup shaped" object. I use that as a pencil holder on my desk at home. The bowl now hold my keys, ring, and watch at the end of the day.
I look at both now and wonder how I had the guts back in September of 2001 to post pictures of these! :>)
See ya around,
Dominic
