Southern States Symposium - Who's going? *LINK*

Mark Kauder, Phenix City, AL

>I know it is early, but was wondering who from WC is going to The Southern States Woodturning Symposium in Gainesville, GA 29 Apr - 1 May?

Many good demonstrators, including our own John Lucas. I am particulary interested in seeing Stuart Batty and Hayley Smith.

>You drive too slow - I've made the trip to Central NJ in less than 12 hrs many times. From S Jersey to N GA - 10 to 11 hrs - so I guess we'll see you there.

>I and the current Western North Carolina Woodturners Club President, Sam Summers are going and we are trying to get more of our members to attend..About 2 hr drive for us. Was there last year, a great event..Bruce Hoover is worth seeing too! He was one of my instructors at the John C. Campbell School.

>T.D. How about something besides Mexican this year (and not BBQ). Just a suggestion, but I will go with the crowd.

My wife actually said that she would probably go with me this year. She is just decorating bowls right now, but seems to be getting interested in turning.

>Was not asked - I don't have a reputation for demos other than at my club.

I did suggest to them last year that they get a good Segmented Turner, and even dropped your name.

>Mark Remind me to indroduce you to the powers that be. Maybe we can get you for next year. I don't believe they've ever had a segmented turner demo and there's always a lot of interst. Of course finishing would probably be good also.

We'll be there!

Phil Axtell

>Hi all,

Janet and I will be there. Got reservations and all paid up and eager to go. Mark, we kind of enjoyed the Mexican restaurand last year, but are game for anything.

Anyone who has not seen Bruce Hoover's demos on sanding and shortcuts should not miss it. He alone is worth the price of admission.

See you all there,

Phil and Janet Axtell

Mark Kauder, Phenix City, AL

>I know Bobby Clemmons - he was still AAW Pres when we started our club, and he was in the area hunting and we had him in as our first demonstrator.

He knows me well enough to know my name on sight.

My problem with my demos is that I would have a hard time filling 90 minutes with lacquer finishing (but could probably), and would have a hard time cutting segmenting down to under 2 hours. My local ones usually run almost 3 hours with a good interactive crowd.

Re: I plan to be there with my VB

TD

>Mark, the Mexican restaurant is the only one that will let us have the space we need on a weekend. If anyone can find a better place that would be fine with me but Barb Gill tried last year and had no luck. So....unless someone finds something better available it will be Mexican again but at least it will be good, authentic Mexican. We'll have fun no matter where.....

>Here is one turner that is NOT going. The noise from adjacent demos is too distracting to get a good handle on the presentation. The greatest demonstrators come off porly if they cannot be heard and the information properly assimmilated. I will save my money for a trip to Kansas. Bill

I agree

TD

>something needs to be done about the sound problems there; I cannot hear either unless I mangage to get a seat right in front of a speaker but since I have to run my booth right up until a class is starting I can never find a spot where I can hear only one demo at a time. It all runs together. Surely something can be done to make the sound situation better. Fewer demonstrators at a time would be better. JMHO,

TD
