Turning Wood DVD

Ruth in So. Cal

>I was all set up to watch 'Turning Wood' by Richard Raffan on my laptop......I still don't own a DVD player. ANn for the first time in as long as I can remember I need to downlaod RealPlayer to run it! Anyone done this? I know it's only $15 but I don't like giving my credit card for something that is supposed to be free.....what happens after 14 days? Do I have to remember to cancel?

Should I just go and watch it at a friends house?

>There are two real-players, at least there used to be. One, the basic one, is free. Their upgrade one has to pay for. Do you have to have that one for the dvd?

>If you have a DVD drive in your computer it probably came with software to play DVDs. Just pop the DVD into the drive and see what comes up. If it's real player it has been selected as your "default" media player. Not sure where to change it. Maybe some other experts can help.

>Ruth, I seem to remember seeing DVD players on sale for about $35 while Christmas shopping for my family. I'd think you'd get a lot more bang for the buck and have a much better viewing experience if you went that route. To heck with those proprietary viewers, anyway!

Just one man's opinion.

Best of luck whichever you choose. Raffan is a fun guy to watch, one of the best showmen available, and imparts a tremendous amount of info if you watch his hands instead of the shavings. You'll learn more by watching any demonstrator's hands than those curly ribbons they exhibit. The hands tell the story of how it's done.

>1) RealPlayer is free, but they make it very hard to find the free version. I have issues with the companies tactics.

2) If you have the DVD, you can play it on your PC without RealPlayer. Both Windows and Mac have built in DVD players, and if not, there are free ones available (that are easier to find than the free RealPlayer player)

It's a great DVD :)

>Thanks all,

The prompt I get is that windows media player can't play the DVD because it doesn't have a compatible DVD decoder........

Guess I will just have to splurge and buy a DVD player.

>Hi Carol,

If your TV is not fairly new, chances are you'll need to purchase a digital to analog converter to use the DVD player with the TV. These can be purchased from most electronics stores for about $20 (IIRC). This happened to me so my cheapo $35 DVD player quickly became a $55 expense.

Cheers,

Mike also in SoCal

p.s. I've been thinking about getting that DVD so please let me know if you find it helpful.

>Dave & others,

Not only are their tactics to find the free download bad - but be very sure to run an anti spyware scan after you do the download - Real networks downloads some nasty stuff with their free player.

>If you are running Windowz98 and possibly Win2000 (crs on that one), you can open the "My Computer" icon, then click on "view". This gives you a drop down window, click on "folder options", then click on the "file types" tab. You can then scroll down to the realplayer extension and edit that to change it the application that will process that extension type. If you have other player software, they should have a setting that will set them as the default player. If not do the above to change it.

I have been watching the Raffin DVD's (have the all) on my work laptop :-) . I took some on a business trip to watch on the plane and hotel room. I found the detail on the picture better than when I watch them on the TV. It may be because I am much closer, but I picked out some items that I had never seen.

XP will play the DVDs with the imbedded software. There are a number of free players, you can go to WWW.TOCOWS.COM or WWW.JUMBO.COM and do some browsing. You can also do a google search using dvd player software and search within those for "free". If all else fails you can get a DVD player fairly inexpensively these days. They hook to your TV just like a video player.

I took Realplayer off my system entirely. They got caught sending some of the personal information back home. It was sent in plain open text for anyone to read. I have a firewall on my systems that asks permission anytime anyone wants to connect to the internet. I caught Realplayer "wanting out", I always deneyed it and then did some reasearch and found they had been caught by one of the security consultants.

>If it is your standard XP, then click on start, all programs, accessories, entertainment and then Windowz Media Player. Should be on your system as its part of XP.

When you are in media player, you can click on "Tools" right under the "Windows Media Player" title. This gives you a drop down box, select "options", and click on the "File Types" tab. You can then reassociate the file types back to Windoze Media Player from Realplayer.

Hope you get it worked out. Just writing this has given me the urge to get a cup of coffee and grap my Raffin box dvd and Mike Mahoney dvd on using the McNaughton system. My work laptop is hooked to a 19" monitor at home (where I work most of the time), which makes a great TV.

>It's a DVD drive but I still couldn't get it to work. All the things that could be ticked off as per Fog's instructions were ticked off. So I bought a progressive scan DVD player for home ($50) and then discovered that my TV is so old I had to go out at lunch time and buy an RF converter ($20)!!! ANd you can bet when I watch the video there will be something else I decide I need....apart from a new lathe I am already buying lottery tickts for - and yeah, I know, save teh money and don't buy tickets.....but if ya don't buy them , ya can't win.....
