Denatured alcohol

Pierre Cyr

>Hello Turners,

Anybody knows where we find denatured alcohol in Montreal, the province of Quebec or anywhere in Canada.

Thanks

Pierre

Maybe the problem is the name *LINK*

Fred in NC

>Because it is known by other names outside the US.

It is used as a solvent for shellac. Maybe if you ask wherever they sell shellac they will know. I would try anyplace that sells varnishes.

The link below has other names for it.

Right !

Fred in NC

>Denatured alcohol is ethanol that has been made unfit for human consumption by the addition of harmful additives in order to make it exempt from taxes.

>Like you, I could not find Denatured alcohol anywhere. I have been using Methyl Hydrate with similiar results as D A .

I will try to find Ethanol now though to see if it is any better.

A few sources I have found

Dave Smith, Longview, WA

>I am sure there must be other products available in Canada but so far I have only found Mohawk Shellac Reducer which is 90% ethanol. I had to look at the MSDS to verify that it is ethanol.

I do not recommend methanol because it is toxic. Ethanol is listed as harmful in the MSDS.

Distribution list for Mohawk products.

>Pierre,

Denatured alcohol can be obtained from BSC:

Blended Specialty Chemicals

1456 Cyrville Rd

Ottawa, Ontario

K1B 3L9

613 744-8896

They are not far from the St. Laurent Mall if you know Ottawa. Cost about $11cdn for 4L if I remember correctly.

I think it is ethanol denatured with 5% methanol.

Denatured alcohol is ethanol (drinkable) that has been rendered undrinkable by various other chemicals, methanol being one of them. In other words not all denatured alcohols are identical.

There must be a place in Montreal you can find it.

>Pierre, I also just hit on this source (Blended Specialty Chemicals) Rosewood Studios in Almonte had some litres of denatured alcohol for sale. I enquired where I could get it in volume, and they gave me the name of BSC.

>I spent my career in the laboratory supply and equipment business. In the retail trade Denatured Alcohol in Canada is Methanol. Recently I spoke to Commercial Alcohols in Brampton, Ontario. They receive the neat Ethanol from the industrial alcohol producers and denature it with methanol or other solvents depending on its inteneded use. They will sell consumers in 25 litre quantities or ship 200 litre drums. It is very expensive, about $50 Cdn for the 25 litres. If you are picking it up yourself, you need a Hazardous Chemical Transportation Certificate. A fellow member of our guild works for Record Chemical Canada and they produce much of the denatured ethanol for the US retail market. He is responsible for compliance and said that even a four litre jug of 95% EtOH should technically have a certificate. In an auto accident if it flashed you would be toast (sorry flambeed) in no time. Same goes for storing in your garage etc. It sounds like a neat method, and I was excited about the possibilities but is impatience worth the expense and risks to health and safety in the home shop? If I had every roughed out bowl I have on hand finished, I guess I would reconsider, but I don't think that day will ever come.
