Segmented collar problems?

Capt Skip

>I have a lovely curly peice of maple 1" x 1" x 18". Was thinking of using it to make a segemnted collar around a walnut bowl. The walnut block is dry but could there still be enough movement that the segmented collar could crack or cause the bowl to crack?

I understand collars are generally aligned with the bowl grain but in this case the collar will be all long grain.

Appriciate your thoughts or experiances.

>While I like the look, and am certainly a fan of segmenting, I question the long term viability of a segmented piece on top of a solid wood piece.

If I were to do it, I think I would use a good epoxy for the segment joints and the connection to the bowl.

>Very new to this site but I didn't know you should align the grain on the collars. Learn something even in a question. How do you add a collar at all? Mine are just glued on top but I see others have removable collars.
