Nova owners ... help

John Trant (Baltimore/WashDC)

>My belt broke on my Nova 3000 and it shows significant wear on he sides (I need to re-align the pulleys). My question: Does the belt have 4 ribs or 6 ribs.

TIA

How Do You Count Ribs

Stuart Johnson

>Dang, there just isn't anything easy in this world. I have a new Gates Micro-V 230J(584mm) belt and it has six ribs and five groves. So is this called a five or six rib belt? The label on the Woodcraft package says "Repl. Bels/Updated Nova 3000". The belt fits my Nova 3K.

>That's a 6 rib. I just bought a replacement belt for my Nova at a local equipment supply. They had to order it in from back east but it was pretty cheap, $13 cdn.

>That is the one! It is often listed as 230J-6 (the 230 referst to 23 inches, the J is the poly-V profile and the 6 is the number of ribs). I didn't know if I needed a 230J-4 or 230J-6 because the edges of my belt were chewed up.

>Stuart:

That belt you have is 6 rib, but count the grooves in your pulleys and think you will find 5. You don't want the side of the belt to rub against the pulley where it goes up to the next step. That means you should adjust the pulleys so one rib of your belt doesn't run on the pulleys. You'll still have all 5 grooves in the pulley engaging a rib of the belt but because the side is not rubbing the pulley, it will not wear or fray it. It should also be quieter running.

Even thought the pulleys were made for a 5 rib belt, it will not harm anything to run it with a 6 rib belt as long as you let the extra rib run on air. Just don't move the pulley so the extra rib is rubbing the upslope of the pulley.

I've been running mine with that same belt, with the pulleys adjusted the way I discribe since the Nova 3k came out. There is no wear on my belt, it's the original one.

>I'm not having any problems. I had responded that it was a 6 rib belt and then another link came in saying it was 5 and both appeared to be correct. I went through my first belt in about six months. When I bought the replacement I went ahead and bought an extra. That was three years ago and it is still in the wrapper.
