Need to change a belt

Need to change a belt

EagleS.C.

>On my Jet mini lathe.

It seems straight forward, loosen allen screws, slide something one way or another, take old belt off,put new belt on reassemble.

Now I know it aint going to happen that way because it never does.

Any thing I should watch out for?

Do I need any kind of wheel puller?

I'm guessing the spindle pulls out towards the tail stock, yes?

If I could find the manual I probably would not be posting this.

>As with any machine, make sure to lubricate all threads and mating surfaces with oil/grease/vasoline or something slippery like that. Prevents damage during reassembly and eases taking the thing apart next time.

>Item 8 in the belt replacement procedure is important. If you screw on the handwheel tight it will result in a lot of drag on the motor and heat generated in the bearings.

Good Luck

>Belt changed, parts break down a big help.

More valuable than the replaceing belt instructions.

Called JET tech when the shaft woukdn't move.

Gimme a dope slap it DOES move towards the tailstock.

Thanks again for the link.

Caution with Link Belt and Aluminum

David Galloway

>I thought about doing that with a link belt and was told by the experts at Highland that such a belt will destroy aluminum step pulleys. Works fine on steel they say, but not aluminum. Wouldn't such a link belt made of a substance that did not hurt aluminum be a great thing for us! VB actually installs a replacement belt on the spindle so that you can make a quick change in extremis. Smart folks.

>No, that's what two different source told me when I suggested that the Link belt would be an easy solution to a need for a replacement belt, not having to pull the spindle.

You obviously have a different experience. If so, please enlighten me. I like "easy".

>Ever since my rubber belt broke on my Nova 3K, I used the link belt from my table saw (I don't use the dang thing except as a table anyway). Granted, the pulley on the Nova are for poly (micro) V belts, however, the link belt has worked fine for me so far. It is a bit more slippery than the rubber belts but that is only noticable early in the turning process of the very largest blanks. In fact, it was your statement that got me moving to get a proper rubber belt for my lathe otherwise I would have been satisfied to carry on with the link belt.

>I would rather put the correct belt on then try to fumble inside that little compartment assembling a link belt.

Thanks for the suggestion though.
