>I was just going to say it needs a more substantial holding rod with a heavy and longer handle.I've used one sometimes but I am going to make a new larger holder for it. It is a snap to sharpen and works great for smaller items.I think it will be better to handle with a larger holder.

>Three places you might want to peruse:
1. You can go the the website Fred Holder set up for me and download the PDF of the first part of my hollowing tools survey. It will discuss the Termite and variants of it, in a context where you can compare it to other hollowing tools
2. Go to the Herm deVries website, go to the tools and tips section, scroll down till you find him discussing the Termite (and his modifications to it), and then follow the link to his instructions on using the tool. They are some of the best instructions around, and greatly helped me improve my technique with this tool.
3. Go to Pascal Oedet's web site where he did an excellent instructional review of the Termite.

>I bought my Termite about 15 years ago, and learned the hard way that speed kills when using it. Slowing the lathe down to only 3-400 RPM tames the Termite. After figuring that out, I have come to like this tool a lot.

>Hi JL
Pretty good tool for small boxes and vases etc., I agree the shaft on the earlier termite like I have, is light but its easy to make a heavier one, what bothered me was the grub screw, it sticks out and it was in the wrong place for me, hooking on the tool rest, so you needed an extra long overhang, you can grind a flat spot on the back side of the tooltips post and that helps but with a heavier main shaft the grub screw does not stick out anymore and is out of the way.
Have fun and take care

>Thanks, I found the site that you gave the url for. That is a good article. Didn't find the other sites that you mentioned.
I am looking to improve my end grain hollowing skills. After a couple of "shattered" small goblets (those nasty catches with spindle gouges on end grain) - I decided that there has to be a better tool out there. If you could point me to the other two sites that you mentioned, it would be appreciated.
