>This is our first attempt at turning 1 & 1/2 inch thick end grain log slices. We cheated and glued a 1/2 inch board of the same wood on the bottom. The size is 12" dia. by 1 1/2" tall. This experiment was to show the end grain in these woods as it is better than the flat grain. The design is simple as we were a bit nervous it would fly apart but the next will be better.

>Jim,

That's really neat. Does the red color stay, or does it fade over time? By the way, I spoke to my son yesterday, and he's planning on getting ahold of you and visiting when he's in Iquitos. He was particularly intrigued by your efforts in animal rescue. He's really into fauna.

Best,

Bob

>Thanks for showing your beautiful rose cross grain. You have just given me an idea for doing the same thing with some locust that I have. May have a super glue soak going on here. GT

>Bob: The colors are very stable. When is your son coming ? We just had another visitor here from California and loaded him up and he paid about $240 in excess baggage. These peices were for his mother.

>He's in Ecuador now for about 3 more months (volunteering on a reserve), so I expect it will be late April or May when he gets there. I'll have to talk to you off-line about the wood question. He's planning a longer trip through Peru and Ecuador, so I'm not sure how kindly he'd take to extra baggage. But I think you'll have fun meeting him. He's a pretty neat kid, if I do say so myself.

Best,

Bob

>I dont want to get deleted but as West Penn Hardwoods advertises on this site just look them up under MARKETPLACE , there you will find the slices under turning blanks in the uper right hand corner. "Warning" , these are not easy but the time is worth it.

>Jim,

It seems like it was just a few days ago that you showed us the raw blanks. The way that you complete work so quickly amazes me.

Please tell us about the finish you used.

Thanks,

Ric

>Ric: The hardest part of doing this peice was the simple glue up and the turning was as easy as any bowl. Our fear of it flying apart was for nothing as the thin board glued to the back side worked perfectly. The finish is about 10 coats of laquer applied in the lathe and using a hair dryer to dry it quickly to get the shine.
