Deft liquid as finish.

Phil Axtell

>Hi all,

Can anyone tell me how to apply liquid Deft to small turnings? I saw it here or somewhere some time ago and can't remember how to apply it.

I've been using spray cans and that seems very wasteful and inefficient, although I get an excellent finish after about eight coats.

Thanks very much,

I mix up a batch using Deft Clear Lacquer and lacquer thinner. I mix them 50/50 and then apply it with a paper towel with the lathe off. I wait just long enough for it to dry to the point that it won't sling off and then buff it with another paper towel. Bounty towels seem to work the best. Some woods take several layers and some just one or two.

>In one of Russ's articles on finishing, he gives a formula for a deft based friction polish - equal parts of deft gloss lacquer, lacquer thinner and boiled linseed oil.

I tried this mixture on a segmented vase of purpleheart, walnut, and maple and got more of a satin finish.

>I use an airbrush.....thin the Deft about 1/3 with acetone.....dries fast, very few runs because the acetone evaporates so fast.

For finishing anything small, an airbrush is hard to beat.

>Hi again all,

Thanks so much for all your responses. I will give them all a try and see how they work.
