Conover Disassembly Help

RK Kelly, WV

>I need to replace the belt on my Conover and cannot get the spindle apart. The directions are only marginally helpful, at least for me. They say to unlock the pre-load washer, but i don't know what that means. I've loosened the preload nut, which makes the washer loose, but is that unlocked? Next it says to move the pulley to one side and remove the key; i can't move the pulley far enough to either side to get the key out. Then it says to turn the preload nut to push out the spindle. What about the handwheel flange? What am i doing wrong?

>Although I don't have a conover lathe I had looked at buying a used one but it was a little out of my price range at the time. But I did contact Conover workshops for some questions.

Try contacting them to see if anyone there can help

>Thanks for the link. When i was first looking at this lathe, i emailed them and didn't get the most enthusiastic response, although they weren't rude about it. I have emailed Alan Steytler, the last owner of the company; he was very helpful when i was buying the lathe, and i'm hoping he can shed some light here as well. We'll see. Surely someone on this forum has taken a Conover spindle apart.

>If the factory can`t help e-mail me and I`ll try to walk you through it.

BTW-When you put it back together slip a close fitting piece of hose over the spindle in the area of the drilled thru hole that serves as a spindle lock. You can slide the hose over the hole to seal it for a vac chuck and still slide it to the side to use the hole if a faceplate etc gets stuck.

>Try contacting Mike Couch @ Highland Hardware. I'm fairly sure he once owned a Conover & he may have some answers for you. Highland does have a toll free 800#.

Will a link belt work?

RK Kelly, WV

>The pulleys are grooved, not v-shaped. I wondered about a link belt but didn't think i could use one.

>Link belt will not work.

Link belt was designed to replace a standard V belt not the type on a Conover.
